Edinburgh Christmas 2019

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and it’s approaching faster than Rudolph on a rocket!  That’s right – a whole year really has come and gone, and now Christmas is upon us yet again. The whole of Edinburgh radiates a festive sparkle, and nowhere is more festively sparkly than the glorious Christmas Market.  It’s no wonder that tourists from both domestic locations and abroad flock to the capital in droves at this time of year. To experience all that this winter wonderland has to offer.

Where?  When?

The market is found on East Princes Street Gardens, near Waverley Train Station and the Scott Monument, and opens for festive fun on the 16th of November.  Entrance to the market is completely free so there’s no reason not to dive in and immerse yourself in the yuletide ambience.  The market stays open until 4th January 2020.

What to Expect?

While it changes a little every year, there are always returning favourites to enjoy.  Mulled wine will warm you through on even the frostiest winter night. Or you can relax with a single malt in the Johnnie Walker Bothy Bar.  For those too young to indulge in alcohol, there is gourmet hot chocolate instead.

There is also a whole plethora of street food to suit every taste.  Returning favourites The Mac Shack will be serving up their award-winning mac ‘n’ cheese as always. While there is other hearty grub such as burgers, hot dogs and pretzels.  Specific diets are even catered for, with The Caravan of Courage ensuring that vegans don’t miss out. Meanwhile, there are more than enough sweets to satisfy the most ravenous of sweet teeth.

It’s a great place to pick up a few Christmas surprises too!  The stalls are packed with everything from handmade jewellery and boutique bow-ties. To artisan soaps and movie memorabilia, so there’s no excuse to leave any stocking unfilled this year.

There’s plenty for the kids to do too; little adventurers can ride the Santa Train, whereas the bigger, braver children can ride on the 60 meter-high Star Flyer or the Helter Skelter.  The ever-popular Christmas Tree maze is back again raising money to plant trees in Edinburgh thanks to the organisation Tree Time (details at tree-time.com).

So whether you’re hungry, thirsty, need to do some Christmas shopping or keep the kids entertained, there is something for everyone at Edinburgh’s Christmas market.
