Valentines Day
Love is in the air. I know – it’s not a very original opening line for a blog about Valentine’s Day, but given that Valentine’s Day is a time-honoured tradition, I felt like I could maybe use the traditional blog opener. Love it or loathe it – it’s nearly here so if you’ve not made a dinner reservation yet then you had really better get your skates on!
Edinburgh is a very popular destination for couples on a Valentine’s Day trip, and with good reason. February brings fresh feeling weather and short days, but there’s something very comforting about getting all bundled up in thick, warm clothes and strolling along the cobbled streets of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Few cities are as aesthetically pleasing as Edinburgh, and a walk through the city rivals Paris, Prague or any other popular European destination, so why not save yourself the cost of the flight and go for a domestic romantic getaway instead?
There is no shortage of restaurants serving up exceptionally delicious food here in the ‘Burgh, so you will be spoilt for choice with everything from mom & pop bistros to Michelin starred eateries. Some of the most popular restaurants in Edinburgh would be The Witchery which serves up a modern take on traditional Scottish ingredients, Timberyard which combines unusual ingredients with a trendy atmosphere, and Dishoom which serves up modern Indian food including a particularly spectacular breakfast menu.
But if fine (or moderately priced, or cheap) dining isn’t your thing for bringing the romance, Edinburgh has other fun things for couples to do like cinemas, Camera Obscura or the zoo! Whatever you’re into, I’m sure our beautiful capital city can find something to suit.
All the above are great, but there’s something to be said for a cosy night in. After all, romance isn’t about how much you spend or how far you travel, it’s about the thought you put into it. If you’re tired after a long day, there’s a lot to be said for a cosy night in with a takeaway or a romantic home-cooked meal with a glass of wine. Our apartments all have a fully equipped kitchen so you can put your own spin on Valentine’s celebrations.
Whatever you do to celebrate, just make sure the one you love knows how special they are. And fellas, here’s a pro tip from me, the dating expert: casually drop hints over the next two weeks that you’ve bought a pair of diamond earrings. That way, she’ll REALLY be surprised when you give her that hedge trimmer. You’re welcome!
